Technical information

The Settlement Mapping block is aimed at assisting governments, agencies, and companies in measuring progress on one of the important sustainable development goals (SDGs): settlement expansion and change.

This block produces a dwelling layer down to the individual shelter, house or shack. This allows its users to measure figures like dwelling count, average dwelling size and changes to these variables over time in order to track a very important aspect in SDG progress.

The Settlement Mapping block uses deep learning AI based approaches for pixel level building level classification. It takes Pleiades data as input and produces a single channel raster layer where a value of 255 indicates a dwelling.

Performance

The block has been optimized for the low income areas of developing countries, where the measurement of settlement change is most critical, most volatile and badly documented through census and other mechanisms.
